The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigerian Communications Satellite (Nigcomsat) in a process that may lead to the deployment of 5G technology in the country
The MoU, which signals the clearing of C-band frequency for the deployment of 5G services is expected to open the way for the operation of 5G service in Nigeria.
Under the agreement, NIGCOSAT is committing about 160Megs of C-band from which government will generate revenue from the sales to service providers through the NCC.
The MoU, according to the Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Umar Danbatta, has the blessing of the National Frequency Management Council (NFMC) which is chaired by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ibrahim Pantami.
On the controversy surrounding the 5G technology, the EVC said it had already been addressed both on security and health related issues and that the Commission had gone further to sensitize the public on the research findings.
5G is the 5th generation mobile network. It is a new global wireless standard after 1G, 2G, 3G, and 4G networks.
5G enables a new kind of network that is designed to connect virtually everyone and everything together including machines, objects, and devices.
Like other cellular networks, 5G networks use a system of cell sites that divide their territory into sectors and send encoded data through radio waves.
Each cell site must be connected to a network backbone, whether through a wired or wireless backhaul connection.
“The new 5G standard is much faster and more responsive, and has much greater capacity, which will be a real breakthrough for the massive Internet of Things (IoT), and leveraging machine learning, artificial intelligence and to automate network management and security.
